Dr. J. David Hawkins is the Endowed Professor of Prevention and founding director of the Social Development Research Group at the University of Washington’s School of Social Work. His research focuses on understanding and preventing child and adolescent health and behavior problems. He develops and tests prevention strategies that seek to reduce risk through the enhancement of strengths and protective factors. Dr. Hawkins is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Board on Children, Youth and Families, and serves on the advisory board for Blueprints for Violence Prevention.
He is former president of the Society for Prevention Research, and has served as a member of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Epidemiology, Prevention and Services Research Review Committee; the Office for Substance Abuse Prevention’s National Advisory Committee; the National Institutes of Health’s Study Section for Community Prevention and Control; and the Department of Education’s Safe, Disciplined, Drug-Free Schools Expert Panel. Hawkins is the recipient of the Joseph E. Zins Award for Action Research in Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the Presidential Award from the Society for Prevention Research, the August Vollmer Award from the American Society of Criminology and the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Prevention from the National Prevention Network. He received his BA from Stanford University and his PhD in sociology from Northwestern University.
