Statement on passage of opioid settlement bill in NY State Legislature
Courtney Hunter, Vice President of State Policy at Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in America, released the following statement on the passage of S.7194 / A.6395 in the New York Senate & Assembly:
“Shatterproof would like to thank Senator Rivera and Assembly member Woerner for their leadership on S.7194/A.6395. This critical legislation on opioid settlement dollars just passed in the New York Senate & Assembly, and it contains essential language from the opioid settlement guiding principles including a dedicated fund, no supplantation language, an advisory board to provide recommendations on spending, a detailed list of allowable uses with an emphasis on saving lives now, and a reporting mechanism to encourage accountability. Shatterproof has actively been working with state and local coalition groups in New York state to emphasize the importance of this critical piece of legislation. After what we witnessed with the supplantation of the McKinsey settlement dollars in New York, we cannot afford to miss another opportunity to protect forthcoming opioid settlement monies. Advocates, including Shatterproof Ambassadors, across the state deserve credit for pressing this issue with legislators and demanding action.”
