Ensuring equal insurance coverage for mental health and addiction
PROBLEM: Health insurance has long been more restrictive for behavioral health care. Though landmark federal legislation was passed in both 2008 and 2010 to provide parity in health insurance coverage for both mental health and substance use disorder, many of the protections within these laws remain unrealized.
SOLUTION: Enact medical standards for insurance coverage of addiction treatment and provide necessary details and clarifications through state law.
Shatterproof, working with Parity Track, has developed specific recommendations to enforce the federal parity law and reduce violations. We’re partnering with several organizations to advocate for these critical elements in states. We’re also collaborating with Kennedy Forum and others to pass addiction standards reforms for medical necessity criteria, and are seeing success in several states, including California and Illinois.

Addiction is preventable. Policy change can prevent overdoses and help stop severe substance use disorders before they start.
Regulating spending of opioid litigation funds
When this legal case is settled, the money must be spent specifically on addiction programs that are proven to save lives—not on filling potholes.
