Family Finds Powerful Way to Cope with Loss

We lost our son James (Jamie) to a fentanyl overdose two years ago. He was 27. We miss him every day. In addition to being a loving son and friend, he was a teacher, a football coach, and a weekend bartender who inspired all of us – his family, students and community - with his dedication, intelligence, and passion.

Since Jamie’s death, our family has done a lot of grief counseling and we continue to share our story and talk about addiction with friends and relatives. When we discovered Shatterproof and its mission to end the devastation caused by addiction, getting involved helped us cope. We felt we were making a difference and saving lives.

Last year, my family participated for the second time in the Shatterproof Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run. It was such a moving, cathartic, and powerful day! Our team—James Werner Legacy—had over 100 friends and family members walk in honor of Jamie.

As a fellow team captain, you know what a meaningful experience this event is, and I hope you will join us again. Whether honoring the memory of a loved one or celebrating someone in recovery, we’ll show that together, we are stronger than addiction. Together, we are Shatterproof!
