Joseph S Lumbrazo
What Joseph was like
Joseph S. Lumbrazo was my only child. From the moment he was born on May 11, 1982, he brought joy, laughter, and purpose to my life. He had a smile that could light up a room and a heart that was bigger than most people could ever imagine.
He was a hardworking man who built his own business through determination and grit. He wasn’t afraid of long hours or hard work. If someone needed help, Joseph was there. If a friend was struggling, he would give the shirt off his back. He was the kind of person who made people feel seen, valued, and important.
But his greatest accomplishment was being a father.
Joseph loved his three boys more than anything in this world. They were his pride and joy. Everything he did was for them. He looked forward to watching them grow, celebrating their achievements, and one day becoming a grandfather. Those dreams were stolen on August 30, 2020.
That day changed my life forever.
Joseph sat down in his recliner to watch television. Like any ordinary evening, there was no indication that it would be his last. He fell asleep and never woke up.
The call that every parent fears became my reality.
No mother should ever have to bury her child. No mother should have to stand beside a grave and say goodbye to the person she brought into this world. The pain is impossible to describe. It doesn’t go away. It doesn’t get smaller. You simply learn how to carry it.
There are days when I still reach for the phone to call him. There are moments when I see something funny and think, “I can’t wait to tell Joseph.” Then reality hits all over again.
People often ask why I continue speaking out.
I do it because Joseph can no longer speak for himself.
I do it because I never want another family to experience the heartbreak that ours has endured.
I do it because behind every statistic is a human being. Behind every report is a family forever changed.
When I think of Joseph, I don’t think of how he died. I think of how he lived.
I think about his laugh.
I think about his kindness.
I think about his love for his children.
I think about the way he always said, “Have a nice day.”
Most of all, I think about how proud I am to be his mother.
Joseph’s life mattered.
His story matters.
His legacy lives on through his children, through those who loved him, and through every family that finds comfort in knowing they are not alone.
I miss him every single day.
I will love him every single day.
And until my last breath, I will continue to speak his name.
